Smiths (The) were a ‘Britpop’ band popular in the 1980’s.

Critics have called them one of the most important bands to emerge from the British independent music scene of the time. They had several singles reach the top twenty of the UK Singles Charts.

They made their live debut late in 1982, and by the spring of 1983, the group had earned a small but loyal following in their hometown of Manchester. The band signed with Rough Trade for a one-off single, “Hand in Glove” which became an underground sensation. Later in 1983 they released “This Charming Man” which reached number 25 on the British charts in December of 1983. “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” reached number ten, becoming their highest-charting and most well known single.
