Sheb Wooley

Shelby Fredrick “Sheb” Wooley (April 10, 1921 – September 16, 2003) was an American actor and singer. He recorded a series of novelty songs including the 1958 novelty song “The Purple People Eater”.

At the age of 15, with a talent for music, he formed and played in a country-western band called the “Plainview Melody Boys”. He later married the cousin of Roger Miller who taught him how to play guitar chords and bought him his first fiddle.

“The Purple People Eater” tells how a strange creature (described as a “one-eyed, one-horned, flying, purple people eater”) descends to Earth because it wants to be in a rock ‘n’ roll band. A science fiction comedy film based on the song was made in 1998.
