Melody Gardot is an American jazz singer and songwriter. She was born on February 2, 1985, in New Jersey, and grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Gardot began playing piano at a young age and also took up the guitar in her teens.
At the age of 19, Gardot was involved in a serious accident that left her with multiple injuries, including a brain injury. During her recovery, she began to use music as a form of therapy and started writing her own songs.
