Jeannie C Riley is an American country music and gospel singer. She is best known for her 1968 hit ” Harper Valley P.T.A.”, which was a worldwide success.
The song was originally recorded in 1967, but was not released as a single until the following year. It became a number-one hit on both the country and pop charts, making Riley the first female artist to achieve this feat.
Born in Anson, Texas, Riley began her musical career singing in her church choir. She later moved to Nashville, Tennessee, where she began working as a demo singer. It was during this time that she was discovered by country music producer Chet Atkins, who signed her to RCA Records.
Riley’s debut single, “The Girl most Likely“, was released in 1967 and peaked at number five on the country chart. The following year, she released “Harper Valley P.T.A.”, which became her signature song. The song brought her international fame and earned her a Grammy Award for Best Country Vocal Performance, Female.
In the years that followed, Riley continued to release successful singles, including “The Back Side of Dallas” and “Good Enough to Be Your Wife”. She also released several gospel albums and toured extensively.
