Gloria Estefan (born Gloria María Milagrosa Fajardo García; September 1, 1957) is a Cuban-American singer, songwriter, actress, and businesswoman. She started off her career as the leading vocalist in the group called “Miami Latin Boys” which was eventually known as the “Miami Sound Machine”. Songs including “Conga” and “Rhythm Is Gonna’ Get You” topped the charts in the 1980s and 1990s.
As a child, Estefan fled Cuba with her family. She liked to write poetry and though took classical guitar lessons, she found them tedious: having no idea that she would one day become a music star.
In her teenage years, Estefan’s father was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. Her mother worked all hours to support the family, leaving Gloria to take care of her father and younger sister. She had little social life and turned to music as a release from all of her responsibilities.
In March 1990, she had a severe accident in her tour bus. A year later she made a comeback with a new world tour and an album called “Into The Light”. Her Spanish-language album “Mi Tierra” won the first of her three Grammy Awards for Best Tropical Latin Album.
She has had international hits with songs such as “Get On Your Feet”, “Here We Are” and “Coming Out Of The Dark” and has sold an estimated 100 million records worldwide. She has won seven Grammy awards and has received a start on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Las Vegas Walk of Fame.
