Donny Hathaway – Donny Edward Hathaway (October 1, 1945 – January 13, 1979) was an American soul and R&B singer, songwriter, and musician. He is best known for his duet recordings with Roberta Flack, including the 1972 hit single “Where Is the Love” and the holiday classic “This Christmas“.
Hathaway began singing with the church choir at an early age and started his professional career as a studio session musician in the mid-1960s. He collaborated with a number of renowned artists, including Jerry Butler, Aretha Franklin, Hugh Masekela, and King Curtis. His work with Flack, whom he met when they both worked at Atlantic Records, formed the backbone of his career.
Hathaway had a troubled personal life, suffering from depression and substance abuse for much of his adult life. These issues, in addition to his sudden death in 1979, led to his name being lost in the annals of music history. However, his influence continues to be felt in modern singers, including John Legend. He is considered by many to be one of the most talented soul singers of all time.
