Deniece Williams (born June Deniece Chandler; June 3, 1950) is an American singer–songwriter and record producer. Williams is known for hits such as “Free” , “Too Much, Too Little, Too Late” , “Silly” , “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle” , “Let’s Hear It for the Boy”  and for her duets with Johnny Mathis.

Williams began her career in the 1970s as a background vocalist for artists such as Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye. She made her solo debut in 1976 with her album This Is Niecy, which included her biggest hit “Free”, which went to #1 on the soul chart. Her follow-up album, Song Bird, spawned her second big hit, “It’s Gonna Take a Miracle”. Throughout the 1980s, Williams released several acclaimed albums, including the classic single “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” from the movie Footloose.

In the 1990s, Williams worked on several projects outside of the music industry, including acting and appearing on television shows. In 2001, she returned to the music scene with her gospel album “Songs of Spirit”, which earned her a Grammy Award for Best Gospel Performance. She followed this up with acclaimed albums such as “My Melody” and “The Very Best of Deniece Williams”.

Throughout her career, Williams has had a knack for blending a mixture of genres, from gospel to soul, and her music has gone on to influence a new generation of artists. She continues to be an inspiration to many, and her contribution to music history is undeniable.
