Charlatans (The) are an English indie rock band comprising lead vocalist Tim Burgess, guitarist Mark Collins, bassist Martin Blunt and keyboardist Tony Rogers.
In the UK, all of the band’s thirteen studio albums have charted in the UK Albums Chart, three of them being number ones. They have also achieved seventeen Top 30 singles and four Top 10 entries in the UK Singles Chart, including the hits “The Only One I Know” and “One to Another”.
The Charlatans first gained prominence in the Madchester scene during the late 80s and early 90s with their first two albums, some Friendly and Between 10th and 11th. This era saw them become closely associated to the burgeoning British dance culture and prompted them to greatly expand their sound, with their third album, Up To Our Hips, becoming the first to be released entirely on their own label, Creation Records.
The Charlatans’ music has continually evolved over the years, as their sound moved from an indie rock/baggy style to incorporate various electronic and dance influences. They also achieved success and acclaim with their later albums Wonderland (1995), Tellin’ Stories (1997) and Us and Us Only (1999).
The band has continued to record and tour to this day, releasing their latest album, Different Days, in 2017. To date, they have sold over 3 million records worldwide, and have become one of the most respected indie/alternative bands in the UK. Notable live performances include Glastonbury Festival, Reading and Leeds, Isle of Wight Festival and T in the Park.
