Billy Bragg is an English singer-songwriter and political activist. His music blends elements of folk music, punk rock with lyrics that mostly span political or romantic themes. His music is heavily centred on bringing about change and involving the younger generation in activist causes and it is said that The Clash influenced him early in his career. Bragg’s political views (and songwriting) lean strongly to the left and he has committed himself to advocating worker solidarity and a broader socialist platform.
Bragg learnt to play guitar alongside his next-door neighbour, Philip Wigg (Wiggy) and they formed a band in the late 1970’s playing at local pubs and clubs. Wiggy remained by Billy’s side in some capacity for a long period of time after Billy’s solo career took off.
At the Ivor Novello Awards 2018 he was recognised for outstanding contribution to British music (PRS For Music).
