Al Jarreau – Alwin Lopez Jarreau (March 12, 1940 – February 12, 2017) was an American singer and musician.

His 1981 album Breakin’ Away spent two years on the Billboard 200 and won Jarreau the 1982 Grammy for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. In all, he won seven Grammy Awards and was nominated for over a dozen more during his career.

His music contained influences of jazz, rhythm and blues, soul, and gospel.

As a child, Jarreau sang in church and at other venues. He performed with a group called the Indigos before moving to San Francisco sang in local jazz clubs. By the late 1960s he had decided on a career in music and relocated to Los Angeles.
