Shenandoah is a musical that was based on a screenplay for the 1965 film of the same name. With music by Gary Geld, lyrics by Peter Udell, and book by Udell, Philip Rose, and James Lee Barrett the musical centres on a pacifist widower, Charlie Anderson, who lives with his large family in the Shenandoah Valley during the American Civil War. He tries to keep his family shielded from the war, but is forced to take action when his youngest son is taken prisoner by Federal soldiers.
The play was first performed 1974 and enjoyed several subsequent revivals which generally elicited positive reviews.
