Run DMCwas an American hip hop group which was created in 1983.
The three members, Joseph Simmons, Darryl McDaniels and Jason Mizell, grew up in the Queens area of New York. Simmons and McDaniels started performing together in the late 1970’s and were joined by Mizell a little later.
Said to be the forefathers of “new school” rap, Run DMC incorporated a different sound, using hard-core hip-hop combined with heavy guitar riffs and rhythm tracks. Their dress of what we now know as “street” diverted from the flashy attire of their predecessors.
They released their first studio album in 1984 and it was the first rap album to achieve Gold certification. It was their third album Raising Hell (1986) which brought them to mainstream recognition. The cover of Aerosmiths “Walk This Way” which featured guitar and vocals from the original band members, became one of the biggest hits of the 1980s, reaching No. 4 on the Hot 100.
Such was their influence, 2009 saw the group inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame and receiving a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018.
