Pink Floyd are a British band who formed in 1965 when Roger Barrett (replaced by David Gilmour in 1967) and Roger Waters met percussionist Nick Mason and gifted keyboard player, Rick Wright. With the release of 1973’s The Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd went from moderately successful to one of rock music’s biggest acts. Dark Side remained in Billboard‘s Top 200 album chart for 741 weeks, longer than any other album in history at that time. In 1979 their concept album The Wall firmly established Pink Floyd as purveyors of a distinctively dark vision. Experimenting with concept albums, studio effects and breaking free of conventional pop-song formats, Pink Floyd prefigured the progressive rock of the Seventies and ambient music of the Eighties.
Pink Floyd were inducted into the American Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. By 2013, the band had sold more than 250 million records worldwide, and in 2014 released a new album (The Endless River) of which the vinyl edition was the fastest-selling UK vinyl release of 2014 and the fastest-selling for nearly 20 years.
