Laura Marling (born 1 February 1990) is a British singer-songwriter. After signing to Virgin Records in 2007, she released her debut album Alas, I Cannot Swim in 2008. The album, which peaked at number four on the UK Albums Chart, was nominated for the 2008 Mercury Prize. Marling’s second album, I Speak Because I Can, was released in 2010 and once again nominated for the Mercury Prize. Marling’s third album, A Creature I Don’t Know, was released in 2011 and she won her second Brit Award for Best British Female Solo Artist.

Marling was born in Hampshire, England. Her father is a musician, and her mother a teacher. Marling was educated chiefly in Berkshire. She learnt guitar at an early age and self-released her first EP, entitled Laura Marling’s EP, at age 16.

Whilst still trying to break into the music industry, Marling joined the original line-up of indie folk band Noah and the Whale and appears as a backing vocalist on their debut album.

Marling has won Brit Awards and been nominated for Grammy Awards.
