La La Land is a 2016 American musical romantic drama film written and directed by Damien Chazelle. The film stars Ryan Gosling as Sebastian, a jazz pianist, and Emma Stone as Mia, an aspiring actress, who meet and fall in love while pursuing their dreams in Los Angeles.

The film’s title refers to both the city of Los Angeles and the colloquialism for dreamers or idealists. Production began in August 2015 and took place in Los Angeles. La La Land premiered at the Venice Film Festival on August 31, 2016, and was released in the United States on December 9, 2016 by Summit Entertainment. The film grossed $446 million worldwide against a production budget of $30 million.

The film received numerous accolades, including seven Golden Globe Awards, winning Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Best Director for Chazelle, as well as eleven Academy Awards, winning Best Picture and Best Director, tying the record for the most Academy Awards won by a single film.
