Kismet The Musical

Kismet is a musical with a book by Charles Lederer, based on the play Kismet by Edward Knoblock. It premiered on Broadway in 1953.

The story is set in the fictional Arabian city of Bagdad during the medieval era. The Caliph of Bagdad has been told by a soothsayer that his daughter, Marsinah, will meet her true love on her next birthday. The Caliph arranges for Marsinah to be kidnapped and taken to the desert, where she meets and falls in love with a beggar named Hajj.

Hajj is really the Prince of Ababu, who has been exiled from his kingdom. When the Caliph learns of Hajj and Marsinah’s love, he has Hajj arrested and sentenced to death. However, Hajj is saved by the intervention of the Caliph’s wife, who reveals that Hajj is really her long-lost son.

The Caliph then agrees to Hajj and Marsinah’s marriage, and they live happily ever after.
