John Leyton (born John Michael Leyton, 6 February 1935) is an English actor and singer, who is best known for his roles in the 1960s films The Great Escape and The Dirty Dozen, and for his 1966 UK No.1 hit single “Johnny Remember Me“.
Born in London, Leyton’s first acting role was in an episode of the television series The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1955. He subsequently had roles in series such as The Buccaneers, Sir Francis Drake and The Four Just Men. In 1960, he appeared in the war film The Great Escape, and in 1967, he appeared in The Dirty Dozen.
Leyton’s singing career began in 1961, when he released his debut single “Tell Laura I Love Her“. The song reached No.2 in the UK Singles Chart, and was later covered by Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley. His 1966 single “Johnny Remember Me” reached No.1 in the UK, and was later covered by Mark Wynter and Engelbert Humperdinck.
Leyton has appeared in stage musicals such as Bye Bye Birdie and Oliver!, and has had roles in television series such as The Bill and Emmerdale. In 2010, he appeared in the film Made in Dagenham.
