John Holt was a singer and songwriter who first found fame as a member of The Paragons, before establishing himself as a solo artist.
He was born on May 9, 1941, in Manhattan, New York. Holt’s father, John Sr., was a big band leader and his mother, Ruth, was a singer. Holt began his career as a singer in his father’s band. He later joined The Paragons, with whom he had his first hit, “The Tide Is High“. This was successfully covered by Blondie in the 1980’s.
Holt’s solo career began in the 1970s. He had his greatest success with the album, Staying Power, which was released in 1977. The album included the hit single, “Help Me Make It Through the Night.” Holt continued to release albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018.
Holt died on October 19, 2019, at the age of 77.
