Janis Joplin was an American rock, soul, and blues singer-songwriter, and one of the most successful and widely known female rock stars of her era. Having worked in a couple of bands, she struck out on her own in the late 1960’s.
She released three albums before dying of a heroin overdose in her 20’s. A fourth album, Pearl, was released in January 1971, just over three months after her death. It reached number one on the Billboard charts.
Joplin sang mezzo-soprano and was recognised for her charismatic performing ability. She was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005.
