Harry Belafonte (born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr.; March 1, 1927) was an American singer, activist, and actor.

He studied drama and appeared in numerous American Negro Theater productions before being singled out as a talented singer and performing in a jazz club. He later changed his musical genre to that of folk and in particular music with a Caribbean flavour.

His acting career took off with the film Carmen Jones (1954). Soon after, he had several hits including “The Banana Boat Song (Day-O)” and “Jamaica Farewell.” In addition to his acting and singing career, Harry Belafonte worked as a champion for many social and political causes.
