George Gershwin was one of the most significant American composers of the 20th century, known for popular stage and screen numbers as well as classical compositions. Having dropped out of school he began playing piano professionally at just aged 15 years.
He wrote numerous songs for stage and screen that quickly became standards and his lyricist for nearly all of these tunes was his older brother, Ira.
At age 38 years, George Gershwin died during surgery to remove a brain tumour.
