Gene Kelly was an American film actor, director, producer, dancer and choreographer known for his energetic and athletic dancing style, his good looks and the likeable characters that he played on screen. Born in 1912 into a working class family in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Gene Kelly shunned the traditional game of baseball to take dancing lessons and in later life used these skills to teach at a local dance studio.
In the late 1930s, Kelly made his way to the Broadway stage. He had small roles in “Leave It to Me” starring Mary Martin, and “One For the Money”. In 1940, Kelly played a leading in the musical comedy Pal Joey. An MGM executive saw his performance and offered him a movie contract with his studio. In 1942, Kelly made his film debut opposite Judy Garland in For Me and My Gal. Gene Kelly is probably best remembered for his lead role in Singin’ in the Rain, regarded by some as the best dance film ever made.
