Don Williams – affectionately known as the Gentle Giant and known for his ballads had a string of hits from the 1970’s. He successfully took his country songs into the mainstream pop market across America and Europe. Williams won several country music awards, highlighted by the Country Music Association naming him Male Vocalist of the Year in 1978. In the late ’70s, he began acting, appearing primarily in the films of his friend Burt Reynolds, including W.W. & the Dixie Dancekings and Smokey & the Bandit II.
In the 80’s he slowed down because of a back problem, but after a successful operation he resumed his career and continued with his hit success.
In February 2010, the Country Music Association announced that Don Williams was to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. He died in September 2017 at the age of 78.
