As a youngster she was encouraged to enter a local talent contest at which she won a prize for singing and operating a yo-yo simultaneously. After winning several more contests a radio station gave her a 15-minute radio programme of her own.
After several years touring as female vocalist with many big bands in the early 1940’s she was able to strike out on her own later in that decade.
Over the next few years she carved a very successful career as a cross over solo recording artist. She had a string of hits , including “The Rock and Roll Waltz,” “I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus,” and “Wheel of Fortune.” In the mid-1950s, she had a series of crossover hits that appealed to both pop and country audiences, including “The Man with the Bag” and Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree.”
In the late 1950s, her career began to decline, and she left the music business for a time. She made a comeback in the early 1970s with the release of the album Kay Starr Today.
