He was born on September 11, 1965, in Harlem, New York. Moby’s real name is Richard Melville Hall, but he adopted his nickname from the novel “Moby-Dick” by Herman Melville, as a way to avoid confusion with his famous ancestor, Herman Melville.

Moby’s musical career started in the early 1990s, and he gained significant success with his 1999 album “Play.” The album mixed electronic music with samples from old blues and gospel records, and it became a commercial hit worldwide.
