Lizzo is an American singer, rapper and classically trained flautist.

Lizzo attained mainstream success with the release of her third studio album, Cuz I Love You (2019), which peaked inside the top five of the US Billboard 200.

She won the award for Best Urban Contemporary Album, Best Pop Solo Performance for “Truth Hurts”. She has also won Billboard Music Awards, BET Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards.

Lizzo began learning flute at age 10 but also had in interest in rap music. When she was in her teens she formed a musical group with her friends. She continued her formal classical music training in college but also immersed herself in a wide range of musical styles including R & B, progressive rock and electro pop. After a time she moved to Minneapolis and concentrated on trying to break into the music industry. She performed with several different groups including The Chalice, a three-piece all-female rap/R&B group that would elevate Lizzo’s profile and reputation. In 2012 The Chalice released We Are The Chalice, an album that would gain them instant local success.

In 2021, Lizzo released the single “Rumors” (featuring Cardi B). It debuted in the top five of the Billboard Hot 100. The single About Damn Time was released in support of her fourth studio album, Special (2022. The single which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and made Lizzo the first black female singer since Whitney Houston in 1994 to win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year.

Along with her recording career, Lizzo has also worked as an actress. Time (magazine) named Lizzo “Entertainer of the Year” for her meteoric rise and contributions to music. In addition to several Grammy Awards, she has also won Billboard Music Awards, BET Awards, and Soul Train Music Awards.
