The Kingston Trio is an American folk group that rose to prominence in the late 1950s and early 1960s with their trademark three-part harmonies and light-hearted songs. The trio, which originally consisted of Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds, and Dave Guard, was one of the first American pop groups to achieve widespread success with a folk-based sound.

The Kingston Trio was formed in 1957 in San Francisco, California. The group’s original lineup consisted of Bob Shane (vocals, guitar), Nick Reynolds (vocals, tenor guitar), and Dave Guard (vocals, banjo). The trio quickly gained popularity with their close harmonies and light-hearted songs, many of which were cover versions of folk standards.

Their first album, The Kingston Trio (1958), was a huge success, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 chart. The group followed up with a string of successful albums and singles, including “Tom Dooley” (1958), “M.T.A.” (1959), and “Scotch and Soda” (1961).

The groups popularity began to decline in the mid-1960s, and the group disbanded in 1967. Bob Shane continued to perform as a solo artist, while Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard formed the folk group New Christy Minstrels.

In the early 1980s, the Kingston Trio was resurrected by Bob Shane and Nick Reynolds, who were joined by Josh Reynolds (Nick’s son). The trio continued to tour and release new albums throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

The Kingston Trio was inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 1999. Bob Shane died in 2020, leaving Josh Reynolds and Nick Reynolds as the only surviving members of the group. The Kingston Trio remains an iconic American folk group, with a lasting influence on popular music.
