Johnny Horton was a country music singer from Los Angeles, California.

His father, John Henry Horton, was a country music singer and fiddler and his mother, Adelaide Teague Horton, was a former vaudeville singer.

Johnny Horton began playing guitar and singing with his father’s band when he was a child. He made his first recordings with the group in 1940.

After serving in the Navy during World War II, Horton returned to Los Angeles and began working as a session musician. His big break came in 1957 when he was signed to Columbia Records. His first hit single, “The Battle of New Orleans,” was a retelling of the Battle of New Orleans from the perspective of the American soldiers. The song was a huge hit, selling over a million copies and reaching the top of the country and pop charts.

Horton continued to have success with a string of patriotic and historical songs, including “Sink the Bismarck” and “North to Alaska.” He also had a number of successful duets with singer-songwriter Hank Williams, Jr. Horton’s final hit single, “The Battle of New Orleans (Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream),” was released posthumously after Horton’s death in 1960.
