John Butler Trio are an Australian roots/rock band led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler. They formed in Fremantle in 1998 with Jason McGann on drums, Gavin Shoesmith. The band’s instrumentalist line up has changed several times over the years, but Butler remains centre stage as lead vocalist.

John Butler Trio found success via the platinum-selling album Sunrise Over Sea (2004) which was certified five times platinum and reached number 1 on the Australian charts. Their 2007 album Grand National helped to cement their growing popularity.

Butler was born in Torrance, California, and grew up in Fremantle, Western Australia. His father, who was a blues musician, introduced him to the guitar at an early age. Butler began playing in various bands in his teens, before forming the John Butler Trio in 1998. He is an APRA and ARIA-award-winning musician.

The band has released several studio albums, including  ‘Flesh & Blood’ (2014) and ‘Home’ (2018). They have toured extensively throughout Australia, the United States, and Europe and have performed at festivals alongside acts such as Florence And The Machine, The Lumineers and Rag n Bone Man.
