Chic Backing Tracks – Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah) … Everybody Dance … Good Times … I’ll Be There … I Want Your Love … Le Freak … My Forbidden Lover

Chic is an American band that was organized during 1976 by guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards. It recorded many commercially successful disco songs, including “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)” (1977), “Everybody Dance” (1977), “Le Freak” (1978), “I Want Your Love” (1978), “Good Times” (1979), and “My Forbidden Lover” (1979). The group regarded themselves as a rock band for the disco movement “that made good on hippie peace, love and freedom”.

In 2017, Chic was nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the eleventh time.

Rodgers and Edwards met in the early 1970’s when they were session musicians. They formed a rock band but never gained a recording contract. During the latter part of the 1970’s, the pair recruited drummer Tony Thompson and vocalists Norma Jean Wright and Alfa Anderson.

Chic recorded the single “Dance, Dance, Dance (Yowsah, Yowsah, Yowsah)” and released it in late 1977. The single hit the Top Ten, peaking at number six, and made Chic one of the hottest new groups in disco. The band put their self-titled first album together, and it spawned a minor follow-up hit, “Everybody Dance,” in early 1978.

At this point, Wright left to try her hand at a solo career (with assistance from Rodgers and Edwards), and was replaced by Luci Martin.

“Le Freak,” the first single from sophomore album C’est Chic, spent five weeks on top of the charts toward the end of 1978 and selling over four-million copies. The follow-up “I Want Your Love” reached number seven.

Their next album, 1979’s Risqué also went platinum and spawned their second number one pop hit, “Good Times.”

Also in 1979, Rodgers and Edwards took on their first major outside production assignment, producing and writing the Sister Sledge smash “We Are Family”. This success, in turn, landed them the chance to work with Diana Ross on 1980’s Diana album, and they wrote and produced “Upside Down,” her first number one hit in years.

Chic’s popularity diminished during this period as Rodgers and Edwards concentrated on producing other artists, but in 1992 they reformed with new vocalists Sylver Logan Sharp and Jenn Thomas, and an assortment of session drummers to replace Thompson.

After the death of Bernard Edwards in 1996, Nile Rodgers continued to lead the band and in 2016 the pair were were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
