Charles Trenet (Louis Charles Augustin Georges Trenet) was a renowned French singer-songwriter who composed both the music and the lyrics to nearly 1,000 songs over a career that lasted more than 60 years.

His most famous song, La Mer (The Sea), sold more than 70m records after its release in 1946.
As a youngster he was recognised for a talent in poetry writing and later attended an educational establishment in Paris. Trenet’s ability with words and music brought commissions from established stage and recording artists. He began his career as a solo performer in 1937.
Alongside music, he also made several films, including La Route Enchantée and Adieu, Leonard.
He celebrated his 80th birthday with a series of concerts at the Opéra Bastille.
