Bob Dylan is an American singer-songwriter, author, and painter who has been an influential figure in popular music and culture for more than five decades. Much of his most celebrated work dates from the 1960s, when he became a reluctant “voice of a generation” with songs such as “Blowin’ in the Wind” and “The Times They Are a-Changin'” that became anthems for the Civil Rights Movement and anti-war movement. In 1965, he controversially abandoned his early fan-base in the American folk music revival, recording a six-minute single, “Like a Rolling Stone”.
About
Folk rock singer-songwriter Bob Dylan was born in 1941, in Duluth, Minnesota. While attending college, he began performing folk and country songs, taking the name “Bob Dylan.” In 1961 Dylan signed his first recording contract and emerged as one of the most original and influential voices in the history of American popular music with a lot of his lyrics having a political thrust.
The release of the album The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan in 1963 marked Dylan’s emergence as one of the most original and poetic voices in the history of American popular music. The album included two of the most memorable 1960s folk songs, “Blowin’ in the Wind” and by 1964 he was playing 200 concerts a year. Another Side of Bob Dylan recorded in 1964 showed a change in Bob Dylan’s style of writing as it had less political content.
Over half a century after his first recording contract, Bob Dylan is still touring and creating music with his 37th studio album having been released in May 2016.
In addition to winning Grammy, Academy and Golden Globe awards, Dylan received the Presidential Medal of Freedom (USA) in 2012 and in October 2016, he also received the Nobel Prize in Literature. He is also a keen artist and in 2019, Retrospectrum, the largest retrospective of Dylan’s visual art to date, consisting of over 250 works in a variety of media, debuted at the Modern Art Museum in Shanghai. It attracted over 100,000 visitors in its opening three months, making it the most visited art exhibition that year.
In 2021, Bob Dylan released a set of media compromising rehearsals, live recordings, out-takes and alternative takes from several of his albums.
