Mario Lanza (born Alfredo Arnold Cocozza; January 31, 1921 – October 7, 1959) was an American tenor of Italian ancestry, and an actor and Hollywood film star of the late 1940s and the 1950s.

Lanza began studying to be a professional singer at the age of 16 having gained a full student scholarship to the Berkshire Music Center. In 1942 he made his opera debut as Fenton in Otto Nicolai’s The Merry Wives of Windsor which won him critical acclaim. At the outbreak of World War II Mario Lanza was drafted into the military but resumed his operatic career in 1945.
In 1947 he was signed to a contract with the film studio Metro Goldwyn Mayer and began starring in films such as That Midnight Kiss, The Great Caruso and Serenade.
After his film career ended, he moved to Italy and began giving concert tours throughout Europe and made an appearance on stage at the London Palladium.
Mario Lanza died in 1959 at the age of 38.
