Jennifer Warnes is an American singer, songwriter, arranger and record producer. She is known for her rich, husky voice and for her interpretations of popular songwriters’ material. Warnes was born in Seattle, Washington, and raised in Anaheim, California. She began her career as a folk singer in the 1960s. In 1967, she joined the group The Wayfarers. The group recorded two albums for Dunhill Records.

In the early 1970s, Warnes began working as a session singer in Los Angeles. She was featured on several recordings by Randy Newman, including his albums Sail Away and Good Old Boys. In 1976, Warnes released her debut album, Jennifer, which she co-produced with Peter Asher. The album’s first single, “Right Time of the Night,” was a major pop hit and launched Warnes’ career as a solo artist.

Over the next decade, Warnes released several more albums and continued to work as a session singer. In 1983 she sang with Joe Cocker on his most popular hit “Up Where We Belong” and in 1986, she collaborated with Leonard Cohen on his album I’m Your Man. The album’s title track, “First We Take Manhattan,” became a hit single for Warnes.

In 1987, Warnes’ duet with Bill Medley, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life,” was featured in the film Dirty Dancing. The song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became a global hit.
