Leonard Norman Cohen (born 21st September, 1934 – died 7th November, 2016), was a Canadian singer, songwriter, musician, poet, novelist, and painter. As a youngster, Cohen learned to play guitar and began writing poetry and novels. He moved to New York City in 1955. He began to compose and release folk-rock and pop songs, and in 1957, made his musical debut at the Newport Folk Festival.

In 1966, folk singer Judy Collins released her album In My Life, which included two singles that were written by Cohen: “Suzanne” and “Dress Rehearsal Rag.” In 1967, Noel Harrison released his own, pop rendition of Cohen’s “Suzanne.” Cohen released his first album in 1967, The Songs of Leonard Cohen, which included his version of the song “Suzanne.” The album also included the popular songs “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” and “Master Song,”.
Leonard Cohen is probably most famous for his song “Hallelujah” which has had major success when covered by others but was not a hit for Cohen himself. In 2009, X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke released a cover of the song and it gained the coveted No 1 spot in the official UK Chart.
In October 2016, at the age of 82, Cohen released his album You Want It Darker. Nearly 50 years after the release of his first album it debuted at the top the album charts in Canada, in the United States it debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and in the United Kingdom, the album debuted at number four on the UK Albums Chart, selling 20,330 copies in its first week and becoming Leonard Cohen’s fifth top 10 album in the UK.
