Wiley is a British producer, rapper and recording artist. Said to be a key player in the creation of grime music and often called the Godfather of Grime, he is considered a pioneer in the British underground music scene but he has released mainstream singles, such as the UK Singles Chart top 10 hit “Never Be Your Woman” and his UK number-one “Heatwave“.

Wiley was awarded an MBE in 2018 for Service To Music. In 2020, he was in the media spotlight for alleged antisemitism on social media and some called for his MBE to be revoked.

Wiley grew up in Bow, East London, and began his music career as a member of the Pay As U Go Cartel when he was just 14 years old. Alongside his friend Dizzy Rascal and other MCs, he created a UK garage sound that would go on to be the foundation of grime music and the UK urban scene. It was during this time that he developed his distinctive MC style, using double and triple time flows to create complicated patterns over the beats.

Wiley released his debut solo album Treddin’ on Thin Ice in 2004. It was his first full-length album and the first ever grime album to be released. The album featured singles such as “Wot Do U Call It?” and “Pies” and was highly acclaimed by critics. It has been recognised as a seminal record in the grime genre, and Wiley was acknowledged as a leading figure in the UK urban music scene.

In subsequent years, Wiley has released a number of highly successful albums. His 2009 album ‘See Clear Now’ was his first to reach the top 40 of the UK album chart and featured guest appearances from artists like Daniel Merriweather and Ed Sheeran. Other successful releases have included Race Against Time (2011) and The Ascent (2013).

Wiley’s success has earned him numerous awards and accolades. Over the years, he has won two MOBO Awards, two BET Awards, two Urban Music Awards, two ASCAP Awards, as well as being nominated for the Mercury Music Prize and the NME Award for Best Album.

Wiley also runs his own record label, CTA Records. Founded in 2006, the label is home to grime artists including Dizzee Rascal, Kano and Skepta.
