Born in London in 1954, Charles was influenced early on by Motown music and The Beatles, and she learned to play the piano and drums as a child. She later attended drama school and began her career in the entertainment industry as a session singer. She recorded her first solo single in 1969 with a then-unknown Elton John playing piano.
