The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip hop trio. Their 1979 hit “Rapper’s Delight” was the first rap single to become a top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100; reaching a peak position of number 36 on January 12, 1980. This was the trio’s only U.S. hit, though they did have further success in Europe until the mid-1980s. The trio reformed in 1999 and did a world tour in 2016.

The Sugarhill Gang is an American hip hop group, and the first to have a hit record with the song “Rapper’s Delight,” released in 1979. The group is widely acknowledged as the most influential early rap group. The lineup of the group consisted of Wonder Mike, Master Gee, and Big Bank Hank. The group was named after the Sugar Hill housing projects in Newark, New Jersey, where the trio was associated. The group has released seven albums throughout their career. Their first album, Sugarhill Gang, was released in 1980. They followed up with 8th Wonder in 1982. In 1983, the group collaborated on the album Rappers Delight with the Furious Five. In 1985, Sugarhill Gang released their third album, Showdown. The group’s final two albums, Livin’ Large and Jump on It! were released in 1989 and 1991, respectively.
The Sugarhill Gang released their version of ‘The Shadows’ instrumental “Apache” in the early 1980’s.
