They made their live debut late in 1982, and by the spring of 1983, the group had earned a small but loyal following in their hometown of Manchester. The band signed with Rough Trade for a one-off single, “Hand in Glove” which became an underground sensation. Later in 1983 they released “This Charming Man” which reached number 25 on the British charts in December of 1983. “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” reached number ten, becoming their highest-charting and most well known single.
The Smiths became one of the most influential British bands of the 1980s, with their music influencing numerous alternative rock groups and singer-songwriters in the following decades. The band’s four studio albums — The Smiths, Meat Is Murder, The Queen Is Dead, and Strangeways, Here We Come — all reached the top five in the UK Album Chart, and they achieved significant commercial success in the UK as well as in various other countries.
