O’Connor was known for her confessional lyrics and provocative musical and live performances. Her political and social activism, her vocals, and her refusal to conform to traditional gender roles were also highly regarded. She released ten solo albums, collaborated with various artists, and received numerous awards throughout her career.
Throughout the 1990s, O’Connor’s work increasingly focused on spirituality, and her music and live performances reflected this. She returned to the mainstream in 2000 with Faith and Courage and released seven more albums before taking a hiatus from music in 2017.
O’Connor is also a vocal advocate for a variety of causes and has spoken out against child abuse and violence against women, abortion rights, homophobia, and racism. She was an open proponent of polyamory and an advocate for mental health awareness and feminism.
Since then, while maintaining her singing career, she occasionally encountered controversy, partly due to her statements and gestures—such as her ordination as a priest despite being a woman with a Roman Catholic background—and her strongly expressed views on organised religion, women’s rights, war, and child abuse. In addition to her ten solo albums, her work included many singles, songs for films, collaborations with many other artists, and appearances at charity fundraising concerts.
