Rodriguez Backing Tracks – Crucify Your Mind

Sixto Rodriguez, often known simply as Rodriguez, is an American folk musician born on July 10, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan. The son of Mexican immigrants, Rodriguez honed his musical talents in the vibrant folk scene of the 1960s and early 1970s. In most of his songs, Rodriguez takes a political stance on the difficulties that faced the inner-city poor. His yrics and melodies, drew comparisons to Bob Dylan and other folk greats. Rodriguez released two albums, “Cold Fact” (1970) and “Coming from Reality” (1971), but both failed commercially in the United States, leading him to fade into relative obscurity.

Despite this, Rodriguez’s music found a fervent following in South Africa, where it became a symbol of anti-establishment sentiment during the apartheid era. His songs resonated deeply with those opposing the regime’s policies, and he unknowingly became a cultural icon.

In the 1990s, two South African fans set out to discover what happened to the enigmatic musician, a quest that culminated in Rodriguez’s rediscovery and eventual revival in the music industry. He embarked on his first South African tour in 1998.

A 2012 documentary about the two fans endeavours : “Searching for Sugar Man,” won an Academy Award and brought Rodriguez international acclaim. Today, he is celebrated not only for his musical talents but also as an emblem of unexpected, enduring artistic impact.
