The group originally consisted of Tim Hauser, Erin Dickins, Marty Nelson, Pat Rosalia, and Gene Pistilli but they disbanded in 1973.  Shortly after Hauser met jazz singers Laurel Masse and Janis Siegel and they, along with drummer Roy Markowitz (who had been a session drummer for Janis Joplin) and singer/composer Alan Paul made up the new incarnation of the group. Further changes occurred in 1978 when Masse left after a car accident (she was replaced with Cheryl Bentyne) and in 2014 when founding member Tim Hauser died, Trist Curless became a permanent member.

In 1975, the group hosted a four-week variety series on American TV. The hour-long show was called The Manhattan Transfer and for the most part concentrated on showcasing the talents of the group.

In 1981, they made music history by becoming the first group to win Grammy awards for both popular and jazz categories in the same year.
