M.I.A. is an English rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, and activist. Her work combines elements of alternative, dance, electronic, hip hop, and world music.

M.I.A. began her career in 2000 as a visual artist, filmmaker, and designer in west London before beginning her recording career in 2002. Since rising to prominence in early 2004 she has been nominated for an Academy Award, three Grammy Awards and the Mercury Prize.

M.I.A spent a great deal of her childhood in Sri Lanka where there was civil war raging. Her father was an activist and was away from the family home most of the time. Her debut album  Arular was released worldwide in 2005. The album title is the name that M.I.A.’s father took when he joined the an independence movement, and many of the songs acknowledge her and her father’s experiences in Sri Lanka. Her second album Kala was named for her mother. To support this album, M.I.A. performed at a series of music festivals in Europe, America and Asia. She also performed three dates opening for Björk in the US and France

She co-wrote the song “O…Saya” for the film ‘Slumdog Millionaire’ which earned her a nomination for an Academy Award and an invitation to perform at the Oscars.
