Louis Prima (December 7, 1910 – August 24, 1978) was an American trumpeter, singer, entertainer, and bandleader.

Prima was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, and grew up in a musical family. He began playing the trumpet at a young age and quickly developed a talent for jazz. He started his career playing in various bands in New Orleans before moving to New York City in the early 1930s.

In New York, Prima formed his own band, The New Orleans Gang, and became known for his energetic and dynamic performances. His unique style fused elements of jazz, swing, and Dixieland, and he became popular for his lively stage presence and charismatic personality.

Prima’s career took off in the 1940s when he signed with the record label Capitol Records. He recorded several hits during this time, including “I’ll Be Glad When You’re Dead, You Rascal You” and “Jump, Jive, an’ Wail.” Prima’s music was often featured in cartoons and movies, and his popularity continued to grow throughout the 1950s.

In the 1960s, Prima teamed up with singer Keely Smith, and the duo became one of the most popular acts in Las Vegas. They recorded several successful albums together, including “The Wildest!” which featured the hit single “Just a Gigolo/I Ain’t Got Nobody.” Prima and Smith’s energetic and humorous performances made them a favorite with audiences.

Despite his success, Prima’s career declined in the 1970s as musical tastes shifted. He continued to perform, but his popularity waned. Prima passed away in 1978 at the age of 67, but his music continues to be celebrated today. He was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.
