His most famous work is undoubtedly his score for The Avengers, which he composed from 1961 to 1969. His work on the show earned him two Emmy Award nominations, and the show’s distinctive opening theme – which he also wrote – is one of the most recognisable pieces of TV music of all time.
After The Avengers ended, Johnson continued to work on a variety of film and television projects, including the score for the 1971 James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever. He has also composed music for stage productions, including the Broadway musicals Annie and Applause.
Johnson was appointed Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2014 Birthday Honours for services to music.
