Laura Mvula (née Douglas; born 23 April 1986) is a British recording artist, songwriter and composer. Her debut album, Sing to the Moon, was released on 4 March 2013 with an orchestral re-recording released on 11 August 2014. Her second album, The Dreaming Room was released in 2016. Both albums were received to critical acclaim and garnered Mercury Prize nominations.

She began taking piano lessons around age eight, and added violin lessons at age ten. Growing up, she also played in local youth orchestras. In her teens, Mvula began listening to R&B and gospel music, and eventually joined her aunt’s a cappella ensemble. After high school, she enrolled at the Birmingham Conservatoire at Birmingham City University, where she graduated with a degree in composition. She began writing songs on her laptop whilst working as a supply teacher. Her demo tapes eventually caught the ear of British manager, music consultant, musician and record producer. Kwame Kwaten. He helped Mvula sign a recording contract at RCA.
Mvula’s debut album, Sing to the Moon, was produced by Steve Brown and released on 4 March 2013. The album entered the UK Albums Chart at number 9, and peaked at number 6 on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. Sing to the Moon was nominated for the 2013 Mercury Prize.
Laura’s second album, The Dreaming Room, was released on 17 June 2016. The album peaked at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and number 1 on the US Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. This album featured collaborations with rapper Wretch 32 and legendary R&B guitarist Nile Rodgers.
In 2021 her third album The Pink Noise was released and she promoted it with a UK tour in 2022.
Her voice has been described as “one of the most original and exciting [voices] in British music”. She has been compared to artists such as Nina Simone, Lauryn Hill, and Björk.
