Garland began performing in vaudeville with her two older sisters and later made her film debut at the age of 13 in a series of short comedies. After appearing in a string of hit musicals including Babes in Arms (1939), For Me and My Gal (1942), and Best Foot Forward (1943), Garland starred in two of MGM’s top-grossing movies of the 1940s: Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) and The Harvey Girls (1946). Her performance in 1945’s The Clock earned her an Academy Award nomination.

In 1954, she returned to a series of concert tours and television appearances. After her death in 1969 at age 47, Garland was posthumously awarded a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and earned a spot on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Hundreds of tributes, including a 1997 Academy Award for Best Actress, have been given for her work in film, music, and television. She has been the subject of several biographies and autobiographies, four feature films, and has had books and other acts dedicated to her memory.
