Jonathan Butler (born 10 October 1961) is a South African singer-songwriter and guitarist. His musical style blends elements of pop, jazz, R&B, and gospel.

Jonathan Butler was born in South Africa, and began playing guitar at the age of seven. It is said that he was influenced by his mother, who was a singer, and by the music of Jimi Hendrix and Carlos Santana among others.

Butler began his career as a session musician, backing such artists as Whitney Houston and Chaka Khan. In the 1980s, he released his first solo album, ‘Jonathan Butler’ which reached the Top Ten in South Africa. He followed it with a string of successful albums, including More Than Friends (1986), Deliverance (1987), and Heal Our Land (1989).

Butler’s music has been featured in several movies, including The Mighty Quinn (1989), The Air Up There (1994), and The Best Man (1999). In addition to his solo work, Butler has collaborated with a number of other artists, including Kenny Loggins, Lionel Richie, and Sting. He has also been active as a producer and songwriter, working with such artists as Al Jarreau, Michael Bolton, and Marvin Sapp.

Jonathan Butler has won numerous awards, including a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Album for Surrender (2000). He has been nominated for eight Grammy Awards in total. In addition to his musical career, Butler is also an ordained minister and an author. His autobiography, Grace & Mercy, was published in 2009.
