Born in 1947 in Southampton, Lewie began playing piano at an early age and went on to study music at college. After a stint in a number of local bands he formed his own group, Jona Lewie and the Long Johns. The band had some success with their debut album, You’ll Always Find Me in the Kitchen at Parties, which was released in 1974.

Lewie’s solo career took off in the early 1980s with the release of his album On the Other Side of the River. The album’s lead single, “Stop the Cavalry“, became a massive hit, reaching number 3 in the UK Singles Chart. The song was written in response to the Falklands War and was never meant to be a Christmas song. Its success led to Lewie being nominated for the Best British Male Solo Artist at the 1982 Brit Awards.

Lewie continued to release music throughout the 1980s and 1990s, though he failed to match the commercial success of “Stop the Cavalry“.
