Johnny Clegg Backing Tracks – Scatterlings Of Africa

Johnny Clegg (7 June 1953 – 16 July 2019) was a South African musician, singer-songwriter, dancer, anthropologist and anti-apartheid activist.

He was born in England and moved to South Africa with his family at the age of seven. Growing up in Johannesburg, Clegg was exposed to a diverse range of musical styles, including Zulu maskandi, jazz, rock, and Celtic music. This multicultural upbringing greatly influenced his musical career.

Clegg formed his first band, Juluka, in the late 1970s with Sipho Mchunu, a Zulu musician. The band blended Western rock with Zulu music, creating a unique and vibrant sound. Juluka’s music became popular among both black and white audiences in South Africa, despite the country’s strict apartheid laws.

In the 1980s, Clegg formed another band called Savuka, which achieved international success. Savuka’s music fused traditional Zulu and Western influences, creating a powerful and politically charged sound. Their hit songs, such as “Scatterlings of Africa” and “Asimbonanga,” became anthems of the anti-apartheid movement.

In addition to his musical career, Clegg was a passionate anti-apartheid activist. He used his music as a tool to challenge the oppressive regime, advocating for equality and justice. Clegg’s activism led to numerous arrests and censorship, but he continued to speak out against apartheid until its eventual dismantling in the early 1990s.
